Communication and Media

Communication and Media

The UNI Department of Communication and Media is dedicated to providing our students with a variety of experiences inside and outside of the classroom that will help them prepare for a career in a communication-related field.

Our mission is:

  • to assist students in becoming informed, responsible, creative, and critical communicators;

  • to enhance student knowledge of, and skill in, the construction, interpretation, and distribution of communication in diverse cultural and global communities;

  • to promote theoretical understanding and professional/personal practice of effective and ethical human communication between and within a broad range of contexts and communities.

Communication and Media faculty members have won 10 Regents Awards for Faculty Excellence since 1997, more than any other department at UNI.

TC helping in Communication Studies

Come to Cedar Falls and get an ESPN credit on your resume. Digital Media students at UNI get amazing production opportunities each fall and spring to work on crews that cover and stream UNI Athletic events live on ESPN3. Students get involved in camera operation, instant replay, and every other aspect of a live production for NCAA Div I sports events.

Communication Students

Every year, the Clohesy Documentary Film Series brings America’s most prominent, most important filmmakers to UNI and the community to talk and screen their work about our most significant social issues. The annual Fast Forward digital media workshop brings dozens of accomplished alumni and media experts to UNI each fall to give students valuable insights and opportunities. Our Interpreters Theatre also hosts nationally known guest performers, and provides students the opportunity to be the artists themselves, either performing original scripts or working on the technical team behind the productions.

Our students take communication into the community and beyond. Our affiliated student organizations include the UNI Speech and Debate Teams (which compete across the country), the Interpreters Theatre, UNI SAVE (Students Advocating for Voices and Equality), the Northern Iowan newspaper, and KULT 94.5 FM. Students in the Digital Media Leadership program travel to Las Vegas each year to experience the international NAB Show with the latest in media issues and technology. Officers of our PRSSA (the Public Relations Student Society of America) chapter network and represent UNI at the national conference each year as well. Many students also take their learning to other global communities with a wide range of study abroad opportunities.
